Just imagine – January 2, 1970. George Gruhn walked into a small store on the 111 4th Avenue in Nashville with an agenda to completely alter the approach musicians had towards vintage pieces.

George was no ordinary guitar dealer. He appreciated the peculiarities of different fretted instruments such as guitars, banjos and mandolins. In his day, most musicians were concerned with purchasing new instruments, but George knew something others didn’t:

This is how Gruhn Guitars started, but the road was not smooth…

The Struggle: Convincing the World About Vintage Guitars 🎸

Thinking about it, what if you attempted to convince people in the 70s that the brand new, custom guitars they loved, were inferior to aged things? Back then, vintage instruments were, and now that much more valued than they were in the 70s.

The first Gruhn’s shop was very small, was only 20 x 60 feet did not have much to offer aside from a telephone and a manual adding machine. But George did have one thing no one had:

And the demand drove down the reason. Gruhn Cutr Guitars, was famous everywhere which meant that they had to move from their tiny shop at 111 4th Ave to a much bigger store, at 400 Broadway. This became a turning point of the business.

📍 Why Broadway?

For artists, Broadway in Nashville is the best place to be – it is considered a holy grail for music lovers, and a dreamland for cultural icons. After relocating here, Gruhn Guitars turned into more than a destination for my preference, it became a point of reference.

🎸 The shop was now infused with antique guitars, mandolins, and banjos. Any musician traveling through Nashville understood that to get the best vintage guitar, you had to make a stop at Gruhn’s.

The Big Leap: Gruhn Guitars at 2120 8th Ave 🏡

In 2013, Gruhn Guitars merged with its current location at 2120 8th Ave. Why the move? Simple – George wanted to offer the best of the best to musicians and collectors.
